Daily Inspiration: Meet Lala Economides

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lala Economides.

Lala Economides

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been baking since I was a teenager. I come from a typical big Greek family and just always loved making my sibling’s birthday cakes.

Then, as I got older and was working a 9-5, any free time I had I would make cakes just for fun. My older sister forced me to make a cake Instagram one day and it just took off. I ordered the next weekend. Two years in, I went down to part-time work. Then a year after that, I was able to leave my 9-5 completely and it’s all cake now.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s had its share of struggles. Finding my niche was one. I don’t specialize in kids’ cakes but, in the beginning, I was just excited for any order at all so I would get a bunch of kid ones and just dread doing it.

Then just the complete exhaustion of being a single mother, working in an office then coming right home and starting baking orders. The fact now that I can solely focus on baking and don’t have to go into an office anymore is the biggest relief.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for glam girl’s cake. My “slogan” is all my girls are glam.

From baby girls’ 6-month celebrations to 90th glamma’s. Those are my people. You won’t see the giant Cocomelon cakes here. You’ll see lots of florals, gold, glitter, and anything that screams glam and over the top. That’s me.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Patience is everything. I think social media is the thief of joy. Instead of being happy, you got one order, you’re comparing yourself to someone else who posted they got 10.

That was me in the beginning and I was so sad all the time why my Instagram wasn’t growing and why is aunt fully booked every weekend. It takes time. There’s no overnight success. You’ll get there in time.
