Community Highlights: Meet Chantée Christian of My Best Shift

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chantée Christian.

Chantée Christian

Hi Chantée, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey has been a profound evolution, catalyzed by the stark realization of the lack of empathy that non-Black individuals exhibited towards the deep grief and outrage within the Black community over the countless tragedies of Black lives lost at the hands of law enforcement in 2020. This disconnect stirred a determination within me that transcended my comfort zone and pushed me to take meaningful action.

In response, I conceived the idea of hosting a panel discussion that would become a brave and safe space for my fellow Black professionals, hailing from diverse industries. It was a space where they could share their experiences amidst the dual crises of a global pandemic and heightened racial and social injustices, all of which often went unacknowledged within our professional careers. I envisioned a one-time event for July 2020, that included all people and gave space for inspired action.

The road ahead was marked by skepticism from those around me, questioning how I would attract attendees and panelists, especially considering the so-called “Zoom fatigue.” I began to internalize some of the concerns, fueling doubts about the feasibility of my endeavor. But deep within, I recognized the essence of my mission – a space for Black professionals to express their truths. With unwavering faith, a few friends and I organized the first Unspoken Truths panel discussion.

The response was overwhelming, a testament to the timely significance of the space we curated. The outpour of appreciation and shared experiences confirmed that our event was not just timely, but a necessary platform for unity and inspiration across all races. I aspired to foster intimate conversations that resonated with all races/ethnicities, transcending boundaries and igniting transformative actions.

Everyone wanted more discussions. I on the other hand some hesitation to creating a series out of the Unspoken Truth panel discussion. Not because I didn’t want to do it. I had several other demands on my time, including my commitment to the Strategic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Certificate program at Georgetown University and my participation in a coaching program via iPEC. With a lot of planning and prayer, I embraced the challenge. How’s the saying go, where there is a will there is a way, my determination was met with divine support.

From that July to February, I orchestrated six monthly discussions, each featuring three to four panelists, addressing topics that directly and indirectly impact Black and Brown communities. This journey unraveled the path to my purpose, where I found clarity and affirmation. It became evident that aligning my actions with my values and beliefs not only fulfilled me spiritually, emotionally, and physically but also encouraged the birth of my venture – My Best Shift LLC – a platform through which I could coach and consult, guided by my newfound clarity and purpose.

I know that my purpose is to be a catalyst for growth, change, and inspired action. So, anything in alignment with that, whether it be my books, podcast, coaching, consulting, or TV show, is a yes for me.

My story is one of pushing boundaries, overcoming doubt, and embracing a life fueled by purpose. It serves as a reminder that through determination, even the most complex challenges can be met with triumph, and the alignment of one’s actions with their beliefs can pave the way to a profoundly fulfilling existence.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has been anything but a smooth road. While some might see my accomplishments from the outside and make assumptions, I can attest that my path has been marked by hard work, determination, and countless challenges. As a Black woman, I’ve encountered unique hurdles that have shaped my journey in profound ways.

It’s important to acknowledge that my story hasn’t been a rags-to-riches story, but it’s a narrative of resilience and relentless effort. Nothing has been handed to me on a silver platter, and this truth is especially magnified due to the intersection of my gender and ethnicity. I’ve faced numerous instances where I was met with rejection and the word “no.” Despite my passion and dedication, there were times when others appreciated my work but ultimately turned it down, reinforcing the uphill battle that often comes with being a Black woman striving to make her mark.

One of the most significant struggles I’ve faced is the internal battle of self-belief. Amidst the trials and tribulations, doubts crept in about whether I truly belonged in the space I was creating. This nagging uncertainty challenged me to constantly reaffirm my purpose and worth, questioning if I was merely a fluke rather than a genuine contributor to meaningful change.

Furthermore, the challenges of securing funding have been a constant concern. As I poured my heart and soul into my endeavors, I grappled with the pressing need for financial support. The burden of being the primary or even sole funding source weighed heavily on me, often casting shadows of doubt on the sustainability of my initiatives.

Learning some tough lessons about contracts and trust has been another substantial hurdle. It became apparent that not everyone had my best interests at heart, and sharing my thoughts, ideas, and visions required careful discernment. Navigating these waters taught me the importance of protecting my creativity and innovation while forging relationships with those who share a genuine commitment to my mission.

Through all these challenges, one thing has remained constant – my faith. Believing that I’m here for a reason and that divine guidance supports me has provided a foundational pillar of what Pastor Michael Todd would say is “crazy faith”. With each challenge, I’ve grown, adapted, and transformed, gaining clarity about my path and the necessity of pushing forward even when the road is far from smooth.

What do you think about luck?
The role of luck, whether good or bad, has been intricately woven into the tapestry of my life and business journey.

However, I find that attributing these moments to luck alone doesn’t encapsulate the depth of their significance.

Instead, I believe that being in the right places, at the right times, and surrounded by the right people is divinely orchestrated by a higher power. I see it as a harmonious equation where obedience and sacrifice lead to favor and reward – a formula governed not just by chance, but by greater source.

When I took that leap of faith and entrusted God to guide my path, remarkable doors began to swing open before me, revealing opportunities I could never have imagined. The process of trusting God taught me how to embrace my truth and purpose, I needed to walk in obedience. It required me to make sacrifices, not just of my time and energy, but also of my pride and ego. Letting go of my limited understanding and embracing a greater plan was the key to unlocking the rewards and favor that have gracefully touched my life.

My journey has illuminated the intricate dance between faith and action, reminding me that what may appear as luck is often a result of aligning with a higher calling. It’s about navigating life with a heart full of trust and a willingness to surrender, understanding that there is a grander design at play. The doors that have opened, the opportunities that have arisen, and the blessings that have come my way – they’re all part of a divine symphony orchestrated by something far beyond mere luck.

While luck has certainly played a role in my journey, I see it intertwined with a deeper narrative of faith, obedience, and sacrifice. The moments that have unfolded are not random strokes of fortune; they are the chapters of a story guided by a purposeful hand, reminding me that there’s a greater plan at work and that by aligning with it, I find myself in the right place, at the right time, with the right people.
