Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Kendall.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I spent many years working as a mom-baby nurse and IBCLC (lactation consultant) at the local hospital. After the start of the pandemic, I began my private practice lactation consulting business and began educating on my Instagram account @thebalancedboob.
Over the next few years, I transitioned to full-time lactation education on Instagram and began my breastfeeding course “Boob School”. I now support families virtually in Boob School and offer workshops on breastfeeding topics. Locally, we have a small team of IBCLCs that support families virtually and through in-person lactation consultations.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a nurse, I had no “business background” so there was a very steep learning curve for marketing and managing a business.
I also began my business during the pandemic when almost all lactation support was going on virtually. It was a high-stress time and learning how to offer this support “totally hands off” was challenging but so rewarding.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I started my breastfeeding course boob school because I saw such a need for mothers to receive more support and breastfeeding education. Most families get almost no education beforehand and struggle because of it. Breastfeeding can be so complex and emotional for families and having on-demand access to quality education can make things so much easier to navigate.
Most breastfeeding courses don’t offer much on-going emotion or trouble-shooting support leaving moms to google spiral alone. Boob School offers moms an alternative with our private Facebook group and weekly support calls to field questions and be in the community. The deeply accepting and compassionate community of mothers that support each other is what I am most proud of building in Boob School.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
For me, keeping my focus on my customers and the families I support allows me to always be evolving and become better.
I have such deep compassion for these families as I intimately know the struggles of being a new overwhelmed mom.
