Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Padgett.
Hi Lauren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Lauren from Ebb & Nova. We’re a 4-piece, indie pop/alternative rock band from Northern MD consisting of myself (singer), Matthew Purpora (guitar), Steven Bainbridge (cello), and Pat Brynes(drums).
Matthew and I started this band as a duo many years ago, playing our first gig in a coffee shop for $20. From that moment, we were hooked. Making music together felt so exciting and we knew that we wanted nothing more than to follow this passion and see where it would take us. By the end of 2017, we had added Steven on cello and Pat on drums, and released our first self-titled album, Ebb & Nova. Over the next few years, we played hundreds of shows together to get our music out there. We look back at that time and consider it such an important stepping stone to get to where we are now. In 2021, we released our second album, Night Sounds, and headlined an incredible show at Recher Theater in Towson. It was such a reaffirming, unbelievable feeling to play for hundreds of people and see them singing our songs along with us. We knew this dream of ours was coming true and that we needed to keep going. Recently, we’ve been spending time writing new music and plan to have our next release Aug 4th. We truly can’t wait for you to hear it!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been a bumpy one, and we’ve had our fair share of obstacles along the way. Like the venues that turn you down, radio stations that don’t want to play your songs, or songs that we’ve worked hard on that don’t get a lot of traction online…that can be disheartening. Oh, and I specifically remember that one time we came in last place in a national music competition, that one stung a bit!!
There are always going to be struggles, but at the end of the day, it’s a good attitude and strong friendships that keep you going. Besides being in a band, we are all best friends and it truly feels like we can accomplish anything together. It’s important to look back at the bad times, have a good laugh, and keep on moving forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Ebb & Nova has an upcoming, end of summer release that we are particularly proud of. The song is called The Island (Goodbye), and it speaks to the idea of leaving behind whatever drags you down and embracing a new place, being spontaneous and just getting away. It has a fun summer feel, and we even put a beachy twist on our original logo to illustrate this new song. The Island will be released Aug 4th on all major streaming platforms. Our Spotify followers will be the first to hear, so make sure you’re following!
As a band, we believe in creating music that’s genuine and relatable, sharing stories and songs that hopefully everyone can connect with in some way. Like our band name suggests, Ebb & Nova expresses our journey of embracing both the tranquil, more introspective times, but also the brilliant surges of creativity and happiness that shape our lives.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Well, my grandmother used to describe me as Shirley Temple (I guess it was the curls and the constant singing). I grew up in a very musical and artistically motivating family. My father was involved in theater, my mother was an artist, and my grandfather is the famous cowboy singer, Don Edwards. My sisters and I could spend hours singing/dancing to his music and making up songs of our own. My grandfather was such a huge inspiration for me to follow my dreams and see how they can become a reality. Growing up with all of that artistic involvement truly pushed me to pursue a life of music.
