Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Roberts.
Hi Luke, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m LJR, an indie pop and alternative singer and filmmaker. I write music about my experience growing up and processing emotional neglect, leaving church and god, difficulty in romantic relationships, and ultimately starting to find healing.
After pursuing mechanical engineering for 8 years (4 years of which were Ph.D. work at the University of Maryland Robotics lab focused on autonomous navigation and aerobatics in flapping wing miniature air vehicles or robotic birds), my life started to fall apart. I was dating a girl I thought we were going to get married and we broke up, my family started to fall apart with problems we never dealt with, and my faith fell into pieces as I realized the God I trusted my foundation of existence to wasn’t real.
It took me years to get back on track, but I did so by going to therapy, healing my heart and doing my best to take responsibility for my part in the chaos, and giving myself the chance to discover what I wanted to do with my life. I discovered it was primarily 3 things: creating art, empowering people, and building meaningful relationships. I decided that whatever I did from that point forward, personally or professionally, would fit into those categories.
Fast forward to today, I discovered that my primary art forms were music and film, so I built a video production company to give artists affordable video content to grow their fanbases by making live concert and performance videos by hosting content creation events for artists making high quality one take videos and photos at incredibly affordable rates through my company LJR Creative.
I also run Music Video Accelerator, an online course and 1 on 1 coaching program educating artists on how to make their high-quality music videos. Being a musician myself, I know the journey and struggle artists face deeply, so I can give artists more of a holistic coaching experience and offer better products suited to the actual needs of artists than other videographers who don’t have this background. Having a company like this covers my basic expenses and the development of my music and marketing.
Artistically, I write my music, direct my music videos, and perform live with an incredible full band. The company gives me the flexibility to work the days I want and take an extended time to explore new options when needed. It’s awesome, every day I get to build a bit more of the life I want.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all, the most challenging thing was realizing I had a massive amount of emotional immaturity I needed to heal from. Taking responsibility for that and facing/healing from the trauma I experienced has been the hardest part of consistently showing up. But it has been so worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about LJR Creative?
We do the highest quality professional live concert video in the DMV by offering full concert one-take moving video content capturing the entire performance while following the emotion of the music for the entire show, making each song its own fully usable video without any errors or bad angles.
We also created Amplify, an all-day video content generation event for artists where they can get insanely high-quality video and pro audio at studios for $250 or less per video. Finally, we teach artists how to make high-quality content so they can do this whenever they want.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
If you don’t take risks, you will live the rest of your life wondering what if. You don’t want that.
