Today we’d like to introduce you to Kurline Altes.
Hi Kurline, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My journey as a speaker and life coach started long before I recognized it. As a child growing up on the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia, I treasured playing outdoors with dolls and other neighborhood friends. I liked playing “school” and “church”. In those moments I facilitated the sessions and guided my small audience on ways to become the best of the best. That was my empowerment coaching I guess LOL.
I was known as the family emcee and pretty much took over every single family gathering including weddings and birthday parties. My hometown Soufriere was and is still famous for hosting pageants. Best believe I planned and executed a few pageants in our backyard throughout my high school years. WOW, that brings sweet memories! Now that I am talking about this, I realize that it’s been a natural gift of mine to seek out and present the best of oneself to the world.
Fast forward, I migrated to the US a couple of weeks after graduating high school in 1999. The struggle was real. Life without a green card, working as a live-in nanny, being abused by wealthy families, and feeling hopeless each day almost became my norm. I remember very vividly, the day that I decided to walk away from being a live-in nanny. I had fallen off of a flight of stairs in the early hours of the morning rushing to care for a crying baby. After the fall, I was yelled at and belittled to the point of an excruciating headache and vomiting. This led to a few months of anxiety and depression.
I remained in the childcare field for a few more years because of my genuine love for children. I later attended college part-time and then seminary school. I pivoted and ended up working in ministry full-time. Kurline Speaks was birthed the year of 2015 during my seminary internship program. I was known as the rebel who did her own thing. I knew I was called for greater and did not want anyone to tell me what I should and should not do regarding it.
“People can only see this far into your vision” -Kurline Altes
I am so very proud of myself for not giving up even when I was told to get off social media and stop being a rebel. I was only a rebel to those who did not understand what resided on the inside of me. “Kurline Speaks is an outward brand of an inward mission and purpose.”
I am thankful to the many individuals who did not cheer me on and super thankful to the small number of those who did.
To date, I have persevered through a divorce, rejection, isolation, and a battle with anxiety and depression. There is nothing that can stop me but I and that’s not going to happen. As a single parent to a GenZ male it is important to model what success looks like, the ups and downs, highs and lows, and with complete transparency.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is rough and still is. If it was smooth then I would have missed out on valuable lessons that I needed to learn. We hear the cliche “trust the process” all the time. Well, guess what, the process is necessary! It helps shape our characters, build our emotional muscles, and give us credibility in the game of life.
It’s always been a struggle. I have never had all the resources that are needed to move this mission and vision along. However, like a diamond being just a lump of coal that stuck to its job, I have stuck to mine and that is to keep pushing while enjoying the journey one moment at a time.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

How do you define success?
Success is whatever you decide it to be. Success looks different for everyone and so is the journey leading to it. For me personally, it is exactly the chapter you walked in on; living my truth that’s my definition of success
