Today we’d like to introduce you to Shea Wilson.
Hi Shea, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I applied to cosmetology school through my high school trade program. Originally, I went to cosmetology school to become a pro makeup artist, but I fell in love with creating colorful hair colors and creating custom wigs!
I graduated high school in 2019 with my cosmetology license. I decided to go to college; however, I love doing hair! While in college, I worked for other hairstylist in salons or their private studios, as well as working at the Ulta and JCPenney salon.
In February 2023, I decided the best opportunity for me as a hairstylist would be to have my own salon! I opened my salon suite at 22 years old and love every minute of it. I’m able to give my clients more privacy and my full attention. My clients with health or hair conditions, like alopecia, feel more comfortable now that I’ve opened my private salon.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
One of the many struggles with being a hairstylist was gaining clientele. Working in various salons, it’s very fast pace, and it always felt like they wanted me to provide quantity over quality. I didn’t like this concept. This concept of quantity over quality prevented me from focusing on one client at a time.
I enjoy taking my time to provide each client with their specific needs but was unable to at some salons. Another obstacle for me is finding local clientele.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, I was a cosmetologist for almost a year. When everything shut down a lot of people were unable to or nervous about coming into hair salons. I utilized social media and referral programs for my existing clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Being a hairstylist, I consider myself a hair magician and artist. I can create colors or design from my head that no one else can recreate. I specialize in hair color, custom wig making, and hair extensions services. I’m most proud of my ability to customize hairstyles for a specific client. I’m also proud of how much I’ve been able to accomplish at a young age.
How do you define success?
Doing what that I love and spreading good energy and experiences in the salon.
