Daily Inspiration: Meet Hanieh Madanirad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanieh Madanirad.

Hi Hanieh, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My professional journey began with my BFA in Graphic Design from Iran, during which I ran my own advertisement company Artiman. I provided branding and advertising solutions to a wide range of clients, from local businesses to multinational corporations. This experience provided me with practical skills in design and entrepreneurship, which have been valuable throughout my career.

My passion for design led me to establish my own fashion business, HaniRad Fashion House, which I ran for three years before moving to the United States. I continue to draw upon this experience in my current artistic pursuits, incorporating elements of fashion design into my artwork.

My MFA in Visual Arts from Texas Woman’s University provided me with the opportunity to further explore my artistic vision, with a focus on gender inequalities and Middle Eastern women for my thesis. Through my artwork, I aim to address important issues related to women’s rights and social justice, and I am committed to contributing to positive social change through my artistic practice.

As an immigrant, I am particularly passionate about giving voice to oppressed women in Iran and honoring the memories of those who have bravely fought for their rights. Through my work, I hope to create meaningful art that inspires others and contributes to a more equitable and just society.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As an interdisciplinary artist, my journey has not always been a smooth one. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is navigating the cultural differences between my home country of Iran and my current home in the United States. Additionally, as a female artist, I have faced gender discrimination and stereotypes in both my personal and professional life.

In addition to financial and logistical challenges, I also faced discrimination and challenges due to the gender apartheid in Iran. As a female entrepreneur, I had limited access to resources and faced cultural stereotypes and biases that made it difficult to establish and grow my business. However, through persistence and determination, I was able to overcome these obstacles and gain valuable experience in entrepreneurship and fashion design.

Pursuing my MFA presented a number of challenges, including balancing academic responsibilities with my artistic practice. As an immigrant, I also faced the additional hurdle of a language barrier that made it difficult to fully engage in my studies. However, my determination, hard work, and perseverance, along with the invaluable support of my mentors and peers, enabled me to overcome these obstacles and create artwork that reflects my artistic vision.

Overall, while my journey as an artist has not always been easy, I have been able to overcome obstacles and grow both personally and professionally as a result of these challenges.
